All about SOY in the virtual book: “Soybeans and barley grown in Latvia – innovation in pig feeding”

The four-year research project of the SOJA or EIP working group “New technologies and economically viable solutions for local feed production in pig farming: cultivation of non-genetically modified soybeans and new local fodder barley varieties in Latvia” (EAFRD programme “Cooperation” 16.1.) has accumulated significant knowledge, which is summarized in one place – in a virtual book, which is now available to anyone interested. The extensive interdisciplinary research project brought together 13 EIP group partners for joint work – scientists, economists, industry consultants, producers, experts from the crop production, feed preparation and pig farming sectors, with whose participation several sections of the book have been created.

For more convenient use of the virtual book, a Table of Contents has been created, in which, by clicking on the topic of interest, the interested party is offered the specific article.

The soybean agrotechnical section summarizes both research results and practical experience on various farms in Latvia, as well as the conclusions of foreign researchers on all the prerequisites for soybean cultivation: sowing, fertilization, weed control, harvesting, etc.

The section on Barley Agrotechnics and Use for Animal Feed summarizes information on the peculiarities of growing hairy barley and the differences in grain quality indicators compared to emmer barley.

Comprehensive information on the use of soy and other legumes in pig diets is available in the section – Use of soy in pig nutrition. This section describes in detail both the various market products from soy and their qualitative characteristics. For the first time, a summary is available on the qualitative indicators of soybean grown in Latvia and the results of feeding its processed product – soy meal, to pig farms.

Economists' contributions are available both in the section - Locally sourced feed raw materials in pig farming: economic aspects of production - and under the above-mentioned sections, giving their perspective, for example, on the assessment of the economic efficiency of soybean and barley cultivation technologies.

The book also compiles information about publications produced during the project and provides summaries of them.
