The ZSA congress held a discussion about new technologies that will help achieve the goals of the "Green Deal"

On March 17, 2022, the annual congress of the Farmers' Council of the association was held at the Zemgale region customer center of the joint-stock company "Latvijas valsts meži". As every year, the members of the organization were introduced to what was started and accomplished in the past year. The members were also introduced to the priorities of the next year and the goals to be achieved. However, understanding the huge challenges that society as a whole and farmers will have to deal with in the next five years, the congress discussions were held on the rise in food prices and energy sufficiency. There was also talk about new technologies that will help achieve the goals of the "Green Deal".

 

The discussion part of the congress began with a short presentation by Maira Dzelzkalēja-Burmistre, Deputy Chairwoman of the Board of the Farmers' Assembly, entitled "Green Course = Food Security?!" This was followed by a panel discussion "Green Course and Food Trends", which featured Juris Lazdiņš, Chairwoman of the Board of the Farmers' Assembly, Madars Lasmanis, Advisor to the Minister of the Ministry of Environment, Rural Development and Rural Development, as well as Miķelis Grīviņš, a researcher at the Baltic Studies Centre at the University of Latvia.

 

The second round of discussions began with an introductory presentation by Edijs Šaicāns (Ministry of Economy). The discussion "Energy Sufficiency and Risks in Latvia" was further attended by Mareks Bērziņš, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Farmers' Assembly, independent energy expert Āris Žīgurs, Edijs Šaicāns (Ministry of Economy) and Kristaps Klauss (Latvian Wood Industry Federation).
