Competition “Farmer of the Year in the Baltic Sea Region”
The aim of the competition is to highlight examples of good and Baltic Sea-friendly agricultural practices, to promote the exchange of knowledge and information between the countries of the Baltic Sea Region, as well as to provide positive, inspiring and innovative practical examples to promote the widest possible spread of sustainable agricultural practices. The competition is international and was first held in 2009 in eight countries of the Baltic Sea Region.
During the competition, the jury in each of the Baltic Sea region countries nominates a finalist who represents the country at the regional level and is competing for a cash prize of 10,000 euros and the title "Best Farmer of the Year in the Baltic Sea Region".
Baltic Sea is one of the most endangered seas in the world. Eutrophication, or overgrowth, mainly caused by nutrient runoff, is considered the most significant environmental problem in the Baltic Sea. Data from the Baltic Sea Environmental Protection Commission (HELCOM) show that approximately 60% of nitrogen and 50% of phosphorus enter the sea directly from agriculture.
