Baltic Slurry Acidification
Project “Reducing nitrogen losses in the livestock sector by promoting the use of slurry acidification technology in the Baltic Sea Region” R#016
(Reducing nitrogen loss from livestock production by promoting the use of slurry acidification techniques in the Baltic Sea Region (Baltic Slurry Acidi.)
Baltic Slurry Acidification (BSA) reduces nitrogen losses
Nitrogen losses from livestock farming are both economically and ecologically undesirable. They can also be reduced by using slurry acidification technologies (SAT). These technologies have been widely tested and used in Denmark, but are not as well known in the rest of the Baltic Sea region. BSA will demonstrate and analyse SAT and promote the implementation of these methods in the rest of the Baltic Sea region.
Reducing nitrogen losses through slurry acidification will benefit both the environment and farmers.
Manure is a major contributor to acidification and eutrophication in the Baltic Sea region. Nitrogen deposited in the form of precipitation also contributes to eutrophication in the Baltic Sea. Expanding the use of SAT will improve the environmental situation throughout the region. The use of these technologies will also benefit farmers by improving the efficiency of nitrogen use from liquid manure, while also reducing dependence on the use of mineral nitrogen.
The three main types of SATs is:
- acidification of liquid manure in animal housing;
- acidification of liquid manure in the manure storage immediately before spreading;
- Acidification of liquid manure during spreading.
The BSA project is funded by the INTERREG Baltic Sea Region Programme. The project was launched in March 2016. The first field demonstrations and the process of evaluating the necessary technologies have now begun. The project involves 17 partners from 8 Baltic Sea countries. The lead partner is JTI – the Swedish Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering.
