Competition for rye growers "Golden Ton"

The "Golden Ton" competition determined who had grown the highest quality rye in Latvia in 2006.
The main prize of the competition, worth 100 tons of rye, was received by the agricultural cooperative “Klēts” from the Gulbene district, managed by Aldis Dukurs.
Any producer of rye grain products who has grown rye in Latvia and has performed rye quality testing could participate in the competition. Scientific research institutions and rye growers whose rye harvest was less than 10 tons did not participate in the competition.
A total of 164 growers with 21,689 tons of rye applied for the competition.
The best rye growers of 2006 by region:
In Latgale – Boriss Veličko, Akmeņlauki farm, Zeļesje parish, Ludza district
In Kurzeme – Gintauts Dima, farmstead Arāji-1, Otaņķi parish, Liepāja district
In Vidzeme – k/s Klēts, Litene parish, Gulbene district
In Zemgale – Rasma and Valdis Bērziņi, Daugavas-Oglenieki village, Kūku parish, Jēkabpils district
In the Riga district – Igors Šaboha, z/s Agatnieki, Mālpils parish, Riga district
The competition was organized by the Farmers' Council and the Latvian Agricultural Cooperative Association with the support of Latvijas Avīze. The main sponsor of the competition was the company Sobieski, which bought one ton of rye from the winner for the price of 100 tons.
