Dūklavs: The milk quota for Latvia is not exceeded
According to preliminary calculations, the milk quota set for Latvia in this quota year has been fulfilled by 99.11 million tons, thus the quota will not be exceeded, Minister of Agriculture Jānis Dūklavs informed today, April 8, at a regional conference taking place in Gulbene.
"The head of the Latvian Data Center just sent me a text message that the quota fulfillment as of April 1 is 99.1%. Although there is still time until the official deadline – April 15 – I predict that the center is not mistaken and the indicator will be approximately the same," said the minister.
This, in turn, means that Latvia will have avoided the previously predicted fine of several million euros for exceeding the quota.
As reported, starting April 1, the milk quota system has been abolished throughout the EU, which means changes in the market for producers and processors due to possible overproduction and price fluctuations.
The current quota year began on April 1 last year and ended on March 31 this year, and its volume in Latvia remained unchanged at 781,132 tonnes. As of March 1, the quota execution was 91.91%, approximate results on the final execution will be available after April 15, while an exact calculation will be ready after the annual declarations of farmers are compiled - after May 15.
