Farmers analyze innovative ways of water management

On March 4, the opening meeting of the project “Nutrinflow” took place in Jelgava region, Zaļenieki parish, where farmers in the Aile stream basin were introduced to the possibilities of reducing the impact of agriculture on the environment. The meeting was organized within the framework of the Central Baltic Program project “Nutrinflow”, which is jointly implemented in Latvia by the association “Zemnieku saeima”, Zemgale Planning Region, Jelgava Region Council and LLU in cooperation with foreign partners.

At the meeting, information about the project and legislative requirements was presented by the head of the Farmers' Saeima Office, Zanda Melnalksne. Expert Mārtiņš Cēsnieks and the owner of the Mežacīruļi farm, Juris Cīrulis, spoke about possible environmentally friendly solutions, as well as practical examples of land reclamation systems. In turn, the head of the Baltic Studies Center, Tālis Tīsenkopfs, encouraged the meeting participants to discuss promoting cooperation between farmers, the municipality and other involved parties. After the presentations, the participants gave their recommendations for introducing environmentally friendly elements, improving cooperation and achieving project results.

By involving local farmers and the public, within the framework of the “Nutrinflow” project, various trainings, meetings, discussions, etc. informative events will be organized in the Ailes stream basin over the next three years to jointly search for the most effective and at the same time economically justified solutions for reducing environmental risks. At the same time, project experts, in cooperation with farmers, will organize three technology/method demonstrations, where the economic efficiency of specific elements (e.g., a two-stage ditch, wetlands, etc.) will be tested in Latvian conditions.
