The Farmers' Parliament calls for declaring a state of emergency in agriculture

Today, June 19, the association "Farmers' Parliament" sent a letter The State Chancellery, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Finance and the Latvian Association of Local Governments with a call for the Cabinet of Ministers to declare and the Saeima to approve a state of emergency in agriculture due to the prolonged drought.

In April, May and June 2018, the amount of precipitation in the territory of Latvia was insufficient for the normal vegetation of agricultural crops, as well as for ensuring their development and growth. It has not rained in a large part of Latvia since April. As a result, agricultural lands are currently dry in many places and plants have weakened or completely died. It is predicted that the harvest in many farms this year will be insufficient for farmers to be able to pay off their obligations to creditors. Fruit, berry, vegetable and grain growers have pointed out the critical situation due to the drought. The prolonged drought is also affecting livestock farmers, as problems have already arisen with providing feed for livestock.
