Farmers' Assembly at Green Week in Berlin BSA

On January 19-20, 2017, Mārtiņš Trons, Agricultural Policy Expert of the Farmers' Parliament, participated in several events in Berlin, as part of Green Week. Green Week is an annual international agricultural and food exhibition that has been taking place in Berlin since 1926. On the opening day of the exhibition, we participated in the international conference “Agriculture and Water – the Key to Feeding the World”. The future challenges of agriculture were discussed, aware that currently agriculture consumes 70% of the world's freshwater resources. In addition, water availability is becoming increasingly extreme – there are places where water supplies are running out and there are places where there is too much water. Politicians, researchers, and agricultural representatives met at the conference to share ideas and look for opportunities for future development.
During the exhibition, we also participated in a meeting of representatives of farmers' organizations from the Baltic States and Hungary, where we outlined common interests regarding the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), as well as discussed the upcoming work. The Baltic States still prioritize the setting of fair direct payments. In addition, we discussed other CAP measures, such as risk mitigation measures, promotion of cooperation, agri-environmental measures.
It was jointly agreed that the next meeting would be organized solely by a Baltic country and would take place in March.
Participation in the above-mentioned events was made possible with the support of the Baltic Slurry Acidification project implemented by the ZSA.
