At the Farmers' Parliament Congress, farmers were introduced to the GYPREG project.
On March 15, at the annual Farmers' Parliament Congress, almost 100 Latvian farmers were introduced to the GYPREG project. Approximately 40 interested parties visited the project stand and discussed the possibilities of incorporating gypsum into Latvian soils to limit phosphorus leaching from agricultural lands.
An online survey revealed that approximately 60% farmers have not heard of gypsum as a soil improvement method. In turn, more than 70% respondents expressed their willingness to experiment with gypsum on their agricultural lands. Farmers emphasized that scientific research and educational events, such as seminars and workshops, are greatly needed to popularize gypsum and support farmers in implementing the method in Latvia.
The event was organized within the framework of the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Transnational Cooperation Programme project No. #C040 “Reducing Phosphorus Load from Agricultural Land by Improving Soil (GYPREG)”.
