Farmers begin harvest - we urge drivers to be patient and careful
Rapeseed and grain threshing has begun in the Latvian countryside, and the number of combines, tractors, and trucks on the roads will increase, so we urge drivers to be more tolerant and careful than usual to avoid unwanted incidents.
Juris Lazdins, Chairman of the Association “Farmers' Council”: "Farmers are already harvesting early varieties of grain, but we predict that intensive grain harvesting in Zemgale and Kurzeme could begin in the second half of the week. Currently, storms have deposited grain in the veld in most of Zemgale, which reduces the harvest and threshing pace. Therefore, farmers will seize the sunny days in the coming weeks to be able to harvest this year's harvest on time, before the next rains have damaged the quality of the harvest even more. During these busy works, we ask motorists to be careful and patient, as there will be both combines moving from field to field on the roads, and tractors and trucks full of harvested crop being taken to dryers and warehouses."
Deputy Chairwoman of the Association “Farmers' Council” Maira Dzelzkalēja-Burmistre: “In Zemgale, the winter rape harvest is in full swing and the harvest of early winter wheat varieties will also begin in the coming days. As soon as the fields have been harvested, the soil is being prepared for sowing winter crops. Winter rape sowing has already begun in heavy clay soils! In rainless conditions, work is carried out in many places even 24 hours a day, because the weather conditions are quite unfavorable this season. Therefore, it is necessary to make the most of all the rainless hours.”
