In February, we met with our partners at the Latvian gypsum factory Knauf Latvija
In February, within the framework of the GYPREG project, the Farmers' Saeima, together with partners from the Latvian Hydroecology Institute, met at the Latvian gypsum production plant Knauf Latvija Knauf (Saurieši, Daugavas iela 4) to discuss the possibilities of using Latvia's mineral, gypsum, for soil improvement with the aim of reducing phosphorus leaching from agricultural lands. We were introduced to the gypsum extraction process and the specifics of the material. Knauf Latvija is a cooperation partner of the GYPREG project and will provide the extraction of gypsum and processing of the material necessary for the implementation of the project.
This year, we will begin laboratory experiments to test the effectiveness of gypsum application on Latvian soils commonly used in agriculture.
But in 2025, the knowledge gained will be applied in field research, where, together with selected farmers, we will apply gypsum to larger areas of agricultural land.
The event was organized within the framework of the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Transnational Cooperation Programme project No. #C040 “Reducing Phosphorus Load from Agricultural Land by Improving Soil (GYPREG)”.
