Latvijas Avīze / With a boycott against the crisis

Milk buyers have sharply reduced the payment for milk handed over by farmers for processing. In turn, outraged farmers, dissatisfied with the predominance of imported products on store shelves, are calling for a boycott of retail chains and blocking of their warehouses. Member of the Farmers' Parliament Board Mārtiņš Trons: "It is very unpleasant that the proportion of local products on store shelves is decreasing and imports are increasingly entering instead. If a liter of milk costs around 1.30 euros in a store, but a farmer receives only 24 to 30 cents from it - this is unfair. A week has already passed since milk purchase prices decreased significantly, but the prices of milk and dairy products on store shelves have practically not changed," Mārtiņš Trons describes the situation. Milk purchase prices have decreased by approximately 40% in recent months. For small farmers who supply milk in small quantities, the price drop is even greater.
