Guide to good manure management practices

Manure is a valuable resource that should be managed effectively to maximize the use of plant nutrients. The project “Improved Manure Standards for Sustainable Nutrient Management and Emission Reduction” (Manure Standards) team has prepared a guide for farmers and anyone interested in good manure management practices. The book draws on both the project results and the individual knowledge and experience of each partner.

The new 16-page guide summarizes why nutrient recycling on farms is essential and shows how to prevent or minimize nutrient losses at each stage of manure management. The guide outlines how to plan fertilization according to crop needs and soil fertility, and provides recommendations on the best manure spreading technologies. It also includes information on nutrient balance calculation and manure processing technologies.

The handbook is specifically designed for farmers and farmer organizations. However, it also serves as an easy-to-read resource for other interested audiences, from policymakers to agricultural educators.

The Latvian partners of the project – experts from the State Plant Protection Service and the Farmers' Council – also participated in the development of the manual.
