May 14 – webinar on alternative weed control

On May 14th at 12:00, a webinar on alternative weed control will take place. In the webinar “Alternative Weed Control Solutions”, we delve into robotics and its powerful potential to solve weed management problems. Discover key insights for the successful implementation of robotics in the agricultural sector.

Innovative solutions for weed control are being developed for all crops to limit the use of herbicides, such as time-consuming or low-efficacy operations. The use of robots offers a solution to the problems of labor shortages and the lack of time available to farmers, providing an autonomous solution. Several trials and follow-ups by the research community and companies are aimed at demonstrating the best use strategies.

Lecturers from several European countries shared their knowledge and experience about weeding robots:

The webinar will last approximately 1 hour 30 minutes and will feature speakers from several European countries with varying levels of experience in the weed control industry. Researchers and industry representatives will talk about the implementation of this solution in several crop categories, such as vineyards and field vegetable crops. Trial results on commercialized robots and prototypes will be presented. Speakers will also provide insight into the robot market, indicating their current applications and development plans. Industry representatives will provide information about their robots and provide feedback from farmers related to them.

PROGRAM and SPEAKERS:

-Challenges and market opportunities for autonomous robot prototypes for field vegetable and horticultural crop robotics / Vitaly Osadchuk, Professor and Leading Researcher, Latvian University of Biosciences and Technology, Latvia

-FarmDroid: Robotization for field vegetable and horticultural crops – functioning and product development / Rasmus Mikkelsen Thuesen, Regional Sales Manager, FarmDroid, Denmark

-Results and challenges of winemaking robot trials / Christophe Gaviglio, Viticulture and Mechanization Engineer, IFV French Institute of Wine and Grapes, France

-Vitibot: robotics for mechanical weeding in vineyards / Luca Cazzola, Sales Manager VitiBot, Italy

Oper8 webinars to improve the implementation of alternative weed control across Europe:

The Oper8 project organises several events to improve the dissemination of technical and scientific results across the EU and to all categories of stakeholders. The aim is to exchange experiences of researchers, farmers, consultants, etc. on alternative weed control at local, regional and international level. A webinar is organised twice a year, focusing on one specific alternative weed control solution. Previous webinars have covered electric weeding and cover seed solutions. This format allows reaching people from different countries and helps to communicate Oper8 results on alternative weed control. Other events such as field demonstrations are also organised in all Oper8 countries and a lot of audiovisual material is currently being prepared.

The Oper8 project involves 8 operational groups in 7 countries. The operational groups involved are agricultural organisations, applied researchers and academic institutions across Europe. Our main goal is to inform key stakeholders about the alternative weed control solutions of each operational group through networks across the EU.

With the aim of achieving high impact and improving the sustainability of the European agricultural sector, Oper8 will bring together 8 operational groups from 7 countries in the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Nordic regions to ensure a balanced representation of different production systems. The project will focus on the issues identified by the participating operational groups, using their approaches, identified problems and dissemination activities. In the Oper8 project, we share practices in the field of alternative weed control and build a strong European network. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe Framework Programme under grant agreement NO 101060591.
