Media tour of Zemgale farms
On October 6, the association “Zemnieku saeima” introduced media representatives to Zemgale farms and agricultural product production facilities. The trip was an informative introduction to look behind the scenes of the event scheduled for October 17. Countryside Day for Travelers, where anyone interested will be able to learn how farmers work and where products come from before they reach our tables.
We started our journey at the Svēte bakery, where we learned about the bread-making process, based on old recipes and local ingredients. We tasted various delicacies produced by the company – bread, cookies and ice cream. From Svēte, our path led to the “Mežacīruļi” farm. The owners Juris and Vija Cīruļi introduced the farm and its special integrated production model. The farm currently has 300 dairy cows, fattening bulls, a biogas plant, a greenhouse complex and constructed wetlands. We ended the first half of the day with lunch at the Pūteļkrog, which is located in the historic premises of the bakery.
We started the afternoon at the winery “Tērvetes vīni”, where winemaker Sandris Laizāns treated us to raspberry, apple and quince wines, as well as introduced us to natural wine and sparkling wine fermentation methods. Next, we went to the “Vilciņi -1” farm to get acquainted with the farm, where cereals, rapeseed, beans are grown and the most modern and precise production methods are used. At the end of the trip, we boarded the “Gaidas” apple picking trains and went to the field to get acquainted with the apple harvesting process. After the work, we were treated to farm produce and a hot apple drink by the owner Dace Drošprāte.
We invite everyone interested to take a look at http://agro.zemniekusaeima.lv/to create your own itinerary for October 17th and take the opportunity to get to know the daily life of producing farms better.
