Dairy producers are determined to overcome the crisis and continue to develop
Today, dairy farming experts from the association "Farmers' Council" met at the Ministry of Agriculture to review the information provided by specialists about the situation in the sector and to develop a plan for further action in joint discussions.
Juris Cīrulis, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Association "Farmers' Council" and owner of the "Mežacīruļi" farm: "We are pleased that several dozen interested dairy producers came to the meeting today. In addition to obtaining current information, one of the goals of this day was to create a working group of dairy producers of the "Farmers' Council" or, as we called it, the "Emergency Brigade" and we did just that! The task of the working group will be to work regularly to promptly decide on the situation in the dairy sector and offer optimal solutions. When meeting with dairy farmers, there was a feeling that the situation will gradually normalize, if only we learn to cooperate."
In the first part of the event, specialists from the Ministry of Agriculture introduced the attendees to the development trends of the milk market, the planned state and European Union support in 2015. In turn, experts from the Latvian State Institute of Agrarian Economics informed about the difference between milk purchase prices and selling prices, as well as the survival possibilities of dairy farms. The management of the Agricultural Data Center also provided an explanation of the calculation of fines in case of exceeding the milk quota.
Farmers jointly recognized that solutions must be sought comprehensively at all levels – from assessing the cost of milk on their farms to searching for new markets. At the same time, it was decided to improve cooperation among themselves and strengthen dialogue with milk processors.
