On April 25, a field demonstration of the “GYPREG” project took place in Zanas
On Friday, April 25, a field demonstration of the project “GYPREG” took place in Zaņa, where the spreading and incorporation of gypsum into agricultural soil with tractor equipment was tested. We introduced those present to the project goals and the potential of gypsum to improve agricultural lands and reduce eutrophication of surrounding watercourses and the Baltic Sea. In turn, Professor Ainis Lagzdiņš of the Latvian University of Biosciences and Technology spoke about the research methodology and field sampling to determine the effectiveness of gypsum application.
Visitors to the Field Day had the opportunity to visit the nearby monitoring station and learn about the research conducted by LBTU.
Many thanks to the owner of the farm “Kaudzītes” Andris Andersons for conducting the demonstration on his field and for the hospitable welcome!
The event was organized by the project partner in Latvia, the association "Zemnieku Saeima" in cooperation with the Latvian Hydroecology Institute (LHEI).
The event was organized within the framework of the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Transnational Cooperation Programme project No. #C040 “Reducing Phosphorus Load from Agricultural Land by Improving Soil (GYPREG)”. Gypsum application to agricultural land has been successfully implemented in Finland for several decades, improving the physical properties of soils, increasing yields and reducing the overgrowth of water bodies.
