On Friday, the "Farmers' Parliament" is holding a debate with candidates for European Parliament seats.
On Friday, May 10, the association “Farmers' Parliament” is organizing a debate with candidates for the European Parliament on the future Agricultural Policy, which will be broadcast live on the association’s “Farmers' Parliament” Facebook account. List leaders from all political parties whose rating exceeded the 2% mark in February according to SKDS data were invited to participate in the debate. The debate will take place at the Ministry of Agriculture, starting at 11:00.
Maira Dzelzkalēja-Burmistre, Deputy Chairwoman of the Association “Farmers’ Council”: “The European Parliament elections in Latvia will be held on May 25, when the people of Latvia will decide on the 8 members of parliament who will represent the interests of the people of Latvia in the European Union for the next five years. As always, a particularly important issue for Latvia is funding for agriculture and rural development. No less important is the new set of requirements in the Common Agricultural Policy, which envisages significantly complicating and increasing the cost of agricultural production. Although winning fair conditions for the rural population of Latvia has been one of the biggest challenges for the members of the European Parliament in previous terms, fairness between the Member States has still not been achieved. For this reason, it is necessary to remind all candidates that the problem has not disappeared, and it must not take a back seat to other European priorities.”
The debates will be attended by the board and council of the "Farmers' Parliament", who will represent the organization's members - practical, productive farmers. The other side of the debaters - political parties - will be represented by the following candidates for members of the European Parliament:
- Valdis Dombrovskis (New Unity)
- Roberts Zīle (National Union)
- Edvards Smiltēns (Latvian Association of Regions)
- Gunta Anča (Progressives)
- Ivars Ijabs (For Development/For!)
- Gatis Eglītis (New Conservative Party)
- Ringolds Arnītis (ZZS)
- Maksims Bartuševičs (KPV LV)
- Janis Krishans (Harmony)
The Latvian Russian Union party did not respond to the invitation to participate in the debate.
Each party representative will initially be asked one question that stems from the party's program, but as the discussion continues, the board of the "Farmers' Parliament" will ask the farmers questions of interest about the political parties' positions regarding the future Common Agricultural Policy and the European Multiannual Budget.
Media participation in the debate starting at 12:30.
