Positive news for smoked meat and fish producers
On Tuesday, July 1, at a meeting of the European Commission's Standing Committee in Brussels, an EC regulation was adopted, granting certain European Union Member States, including Latvia, a national derogation from the maximum permissible level of benzo(a)pyrene in traditional smoked products.

This means that for the next three years, Latvia will only be able to produce and distribute smoked meat and meat products using traditional methods within its own territory, Ireland, Spain, Croatia, Cyprus, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Finland, Sweden and the United Kingdom. In turn, Latvia, Ireland, Romania, Finland, Sweden and the United Kingdom will be able to distribute smoked fish and fish products using traditional methods within their national territory for the next three years. For smoked meat and fish products, as before, the requirements of the regulation set the permissible benzo(a)pyrene norm at up to 5 micrograms per kilogram.
