Baltic Slurry Acidification 2nd work package group meeting in Sweden

Project Work Package 2 (WP 2) Working Group Meeting In Sweden
(address: Uppsala, Ultunaallēn 4, Sweden)
The BSA (Nitrogen Loss Reduction) WP 2 working group meeting was held in Uppsala, Sweden from 29 to 30 January. The working group was attended by Raimonds Jakovickis, an animal husbandry expert from the Latvian Agricultural Society.
The meeting discussed the results of liquid manure titrations of partners involved in the Baltic Sea region project, field demonstrations, and other issues.
Titration results for slurry differ in different countries. The results are influenced by the animal species, the dry matter content of the slurry, and the ambient temperature. Colleagues from other partners involved in the project cannot yet draw any conclusions about the different results obtained. The trials will continue. In Latvia, the titration was carried out by the project partner “Lauku Agro”. The results obtained show that in order to reduce the pH of pig slurry from 7.2 to 6.4, 3 liters of sulfuric acid per 1000 liters of slurry is required.
Polish and Swedish partners are conducting a study investigating the effects of acidified slurry on concrete. The trials are ongoing. The researchers report that the literature indicates that slurry causes corrosion of concrete when the pH exceeds 12.5.
