WATERDRIVE project seminar “Good practices for floodplain meadow management”
On August 25, the Farmers' Council, together with the Jelgava region municipality, organized a good practice seminar on the restoration, preservation and care of floodplain meadows. The aim of the seminar was to promote dialogue between landowners and the municipality and state institutions in order to promote the management of river floodplain areas and improve knowledge in the field of meadow care.
As part of the event, Dr.arch., assistant professor, landscape architect Madara Markova spoke more about the assessment of ecosystem services in the Svēte River basin. Ingars Rozītis, assistant manager of the project “Responsible Water Resources Management for Rural Development at the Local Level and in the Baltic Sea Region (WATERDRIVE)” No. RO94, presented the activities, results and support instruments of the Jelgava Municipality project.
Subsequently, Dr.sc.ing, professor, leading researcher Ainis Lagzdiņš spoke more about water quality monitoring and the use of geospatial information to assess plant nutrient losses in the Svēte River basin. In turn, the Head of the Nature Protection Department of the Pierīga Regional Administration of the Nature Protection Board, Kārlis Lapiņš, told the audience how a landowner can manage in a more environmentally friendly way. In conclusion, Iveta Grudovska, an agricultural expert at the Farmers' Assembly, spoke more about watercourse buffer zones.
