Seminar “Producing quality calves in beef cattle herds”

On March 2, the ZSA, in cooperation with the “Meat Cattle Breeders’ Association”, organized a remote seminar “Producing quality calves in beef cattle herds”. Raimonds Jakovickis, livestock expert of the “Farmers’ Parliament” association and chairman of the board of the “Meat Cattle Breeders’ Association”, introduced the activities of the BreedExpo project. Kaspars Ādams, head of SIA “Liellopu izsoļu nams”, spoke about Latvia’s export opportunities to the EU and third-country markets.

In the continuation of the seminar, veterinarian Andrejs Elksniņš spoke about providing assistance in case of difficult births. Iveta Gūtmane, chief agronomist of SIA “Latvijas šķirēs sējas” (Latvian Breed Seeds), introduced the basic principles of establishing forage grasslands. Vizma Sileniece, head of SIA “Silenieces ciltsdarba serviss” (Silenieces Breeding Service), presented the influence of genetic factors on the quality of offspring, while GLAB board member and LGLA breeding specialist Ieva Freidenfelde spoke about the selection of breeding bulls in suckler cow herds.
