Seminar on the strategy for implementing environmentally friendly elements for cereal growers

On February 17, 2017, the crop growers of the Farmers' Council discussed the future challenges in grain farming. The meeting participants agreed that there are many different solutions to solve the problems on their own, for example, how to achieve higher yields and retain the best employees. However, each individual farmer may feel powerless in the face of challenges such as the unstable Latvian land market and tax policy. There was much discussion about the need to plan grain farming revenues at least 10 years ahead in order to be able to purchase the necessary resources for farming – land, machinery and primary processing equipment and buildings. However, the current policy planning not only in Latvia, but also in the EU as a whole raises concerns about the long-term development strategy. Changes in direct payments – strange requirements for greening, limiting pesticides and reducing GHG emissions from agricultural activities, create tension and uncertainty about the future. Although the conclusions may initially seem quite bleak, grain farmers are determined to fight for their place in Latvian agriculture in the long term and admitted that such "brainstorming sessions" are very educational - namely, you are not alone with your problem!
