Strengthen your immunity – choose local!
In order to prepare for the autumn season in time and strengthen their immunity, the association "Farmers' Council" (ZSA) calls on Latvian residents to choose local produce in their daily menu, which is fresher, higher quality, and healthier than imported food from distant countries.
Maira Dzelzkalēja-Burmistre, Deputy Chairwoman of the Board of the Association “Farmers' Council”: “It is no secret that food products that travel much further to reach us are mostly not of the first freshness and have been processed with means that our farmers have long since been allowed to use. At the same time, we can say with confidence that Latvian agricultural products are fresh, high-quality and healthy. Moreover, by buying local products, we support not only our farmers and producers, but the entire national economy and the country as a whole, because in this way the funds paid by Latvian residents remain in the national economy, rather than going to other countries.”
Edīte Kaufmane, leading researcher at the Dobele Horticultural Institute: “Fruits, berries and vegetables are the products that must be consumed in the autumn-winter season, as they contain the most biologically active substances. Moreover, the composition of these substances is much higher in fruits and vegetables grown in our climatic zone, compared to those grown in southern countries. The second advantage is that the Latvian climate determines a significantly lower need for the use of plant protection products. I recommend that everyone eat everything that grows in Latvian gardens, fields and greenhouses right now, and we will also teach children from an early age to eat more fruits and vegetables, leaving less space on the menu for sweets! This will definitely reduce the risk of contracting common autumn colds and also the biggest fear of the moment - the COVID virus, as well as provide support to fruit and vegetable growers who are currently, fighting the vagaries of nature, rushing to harvest so that it will be available in stores throughout the winter.”
Professor and gastroenterologist Anatolijs Danilans: "We can be proud that Latvia can provide itself with the necessary products and feed its people with healthy and nutritious food. I also encourage everyone to buy more Latvian products in their daily lives. Because it is very important to me that the standard of living of our people increases and people are healthier, then I would have less work as a doctor."
