The EC promises to implement support measures for private storage of dairy products

On 28 August, the European Commission's Agricultural Markets Expert Group announced its decision to implement support measures in the milk and milk products market by granting aid for private storage of butter and skimmed milk powder. The EC also informed that it was assessing the possibility of granting aid for private storage of cheese, taking into account that cheese was the main product exported to Russia, not only in the dairy products group, but also in general. The EU is expected to cover the costs of private storage for three to seven months.

.

The EC plans to decide on the approval of private storage aid for butter and skimmed milk powder next week – on September 2 – at a meeting of the EC Agricultural Markets Expert Group convened specifically for this purpose. The EC has not yet made the amount of support public. The EC will decide later whether support will also be granted for cheese storage.

To date, Latvian dairy producers have not used private storage support measures for butter and skimmed milk powder, while support for cheese was used in small quantities in the first years of EU membership.
