The Farmers' Parliament discussed current events in agriculture with Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš

Today, June 5, the leadership of the association "Farmers' Parliament" met with Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš to discuss current events in agriculture and raise the issue of the Common Agricultural Policy in Europe after 2020.

Maira Dzelzkalēja-Burmistre, Deputy Chairwoman of the Board of the Association “Farmers' Council”: "Thank you to Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš for today's meeting, during which we had the opportunity to discuss issues relevant to farmers. The primary issue was the Common Agricultural Policy in Europe after 2020. During the conversation, we informed the Prime Minister that the next two years are very important for Latvian farmers, because negotiations will take place in Brussels and an agreement will be reached on the financing of the next planning period, and we as a country must not allow a reduction in total agricultural funding compared to the previous period. On the contrary, we must work together to equalize direct payments and achieve equality. During the conversation, we also introduced the Prime Minister to the importance of rural development funding for rural regions.

During the meeting, we also discussed national-level issues, such as state support for farmers in this and the next planning period, tax issues, and maximum allocation of state and European Union support to producing farmers.

We are pleased with the constructive meeting and look forward to equally productive cooperation in the future!”

The Prime Minister met with the Chairman of the association “Farmers' Parliament” Juris Lazdiņš, Deputy Chairman Maira Dzelzkalēja-Burmistre, board members Mārtiņš Trons, Kaspars Ādams, Arnolds Jātnieks, and expert Valters Zelčs.
