Farmers' Parliament: We are pleased with the vote of the Saeima deputies

Today, May 15, the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia passed the second reading with 80 votes in favor. Amendments to the Law "On the Privatization of Land in Rural Areas", which is a step forward so that agricultural land (AUL) is used for its intended purpose - for the production of agricultural products, not for investment transactions.

.

Juris Lazdins, Chairman of the Association "Farmers' Council": "We are pleased with the amendments to the law "On Land Privatization in Rural Areas" adopted in the 2nd reading in the Saeima today, which, after adoption in the 3rd reading and promulgation, will have to limit speculative transactions with LIZ. Our goal is for LIZ to serve its intended purpose - the production of agricultural products. We are aware that the work on the amendments to the law is not going as smoothly as hoped and for 15 days now, any citizen of the European Union has been able to purchase Latvia's most important resource - agricultural land, therefore we hope that the Saeima deputies will gather all their forces in the final stretch and concentrate on adopting the law by the end of the Spring session."

It must be admitted that the work on amendments to the law is not over today. Additional proposals will be submitted next week, followed by several weeks for the proposals to be considered at working group meetings. Next, the 3rd reading in the Saeima will take place, and only then will the law be submitted to the President for approval.
