The Farmers' Council presents Latvia with a book on agriculture on its centenary
On Friday, March 9, the Bulduri Horticulture Secondary School will host the opening ceremony of the book “Strength Bread” by the association “Farmers’ Council” and writer Ilze Būmane. The book, written over several years, is about how, over the course of 25 years, Latvian farmers have created a globally competitive agricultural sector and their own public organization, which has been working to defend the interests of its members and all Latvian farmers in Latvia and Europe since its inception.
Maira Dzelzkalēja-Burmistre, Deputy Chairwoman of the Association “Farmers’ Council”: "The idea of summarizing the dynamic work of the association "Farmers' Council", the various twists and turns of agricultural policy and their impact on farming in rural Latvia has been floating around for a couple of years. In turn, writer Ilze Būmane, who has always been close to the Latvian countryside, expressed her desire to help us. Latvia's centenary marked the goal – to get the book out and bring it to readers."
With this book, we want to show the Latvian society and future generations of farmers how, upon regaining Latvia's independence, agriculture was built from scratch, which honors the knowledge of its ancestors and successfully combines it with today's most modern technologies. In 25 years, we have created a globally competitive agricultural sector. Being open to the world, we quickly learned and implemented the knowledge gained in other countries, thus avoiding many painful failures.
A democratic society is not born in one day. “The Farmers’ Council” is a good example of how an annual event in the 1990s can grow into a strong and independent public organization that unites the most active and, I would say, responsible Latvian farmers who understand that only we ourselves are responsible for our country, agriculture and our families. The more we invest, the more we will receive.”
The book launch celebration begins at 2:30 p.m. During the event, we will look back on the first 20 years of the organization's activities, as well as enjoy a musical performance by the group "Tautumeitas".
