Ministry of Agriculture will provide the EC with additional arguments for the need for support for Latvian farmers for crops damaged in the winter
On Monday, April 14, the Ministry of Agriculture in Luxembourg appealed to the EU Council of Agriculture and Fisheries Ministers with a request to implement emergency measures, providing support to Latvian arable crop (grain and rapeseed) growers, who have found themselves in a critical situation after the severe frosts of the unfavorable 2013/2014 winter.
.
It has already been reported that in the winter of 2013/2014, the weather conditions for winter crops were very unfavorable, almost throughout the entire territory of Latvia, up to 80 percent of winter crops froze, in some regions even 98 percent of winter crops froze. The atypical weather conditions, when very heavy frost persisted for several weeks, have caused significant damage to the Latvian field crop sector. The situation is made even more critical by the fact that last autumn in Latvia a record-breaking area of fields was sown with winter crops.
.
By compiling and evaluating data on losses to Latvian farmers in connection with winter crops destroyed due to adverse weather conditions in the winter of 2013/2014 (winter crops have died or been severely damaged in large areas), the Ministry of Agriculture will soon address the European Commission with additional arguments so that Latvian farmers have the opportunity to receive support for crop damage.
