Farmers' Parliament: The President is ready to personally get involved in solving farmers' problems

Yesterday, May 12, the President of Latvia, Andris Bērziņš, together with the Minister of Agriculture, Jānis Dūklavs, the leadership of the Farmers' Assembly (ZSA) and farmers, visited two ZSA members, LPKS "Latraps" and z/s "Rudeņi". During the visit, the officials discussed with the farmers the amendments to the law "On the Privatization of Land in Rural Areas", currently in the Saeima, reducing the bureaucratic burden for rural entrepreneurs, and the development of agricultural science, which should be related to the interests and needs of producers.

During the meeting, the most important issue of discussion was the amendments to the Law “On the Privatization of Land in Rural Areas”. For 13 days now, any citizen of the European Union can purchase Latvia’s most important resource – agricultural land (AGL). All parties agreed that the amendments to the law should be adopted as soon as possible.

.

Juris Lazdins, Chairman of the Association "Farmers' Council": "By actively participating in committee meetings and working groups, we see that the work on these amendments is quite complicated and is not going as smoothly as we would like. Deputies should be aware of the importance of the law and we want to appeal to their conscience, because for almost half a month now, anyone who wants to can buy Latvian land. We hope that after discussions between President Andris Bērziņš and farmers, the process will be accelerated."

.

As one of the current issues, the participants of the conversation mentioned the need for more rapid development of agricultural science and its direct connection with the interests of producers. The President of Latvia acknowledged that on this issue, cooperation should also be established with the region's neighbors to exchange information and provide each other with the necessary research results.

.

Reducing the burden of bureaucracy was also discussed during the meeting, as farmers agreed that various government services and institutions should apply a consultative approach, rather than bureaucratic punishment.

.

During the visit, the need to ensure generational change in agriculture and attract young people to rural entrepreneurship was discussed.

.

President of Latvia Andris Berzins: "The farm "Rudeņi" is an excellent example of how generations pass on their knowledge to the next generations and children stay in Latvia to continue what their parents started."

.

The cooperative society "Latraps" is the third largest private capital company in Latvia, which unites about 750 members and exports approximately 80% of grain products. The cultivated areas of the farms range from 20 ha to 6000 ha. In turn, the farm "Rudeņi" is a model farm, how to pass on successful farming practices in crop production and animal husbandry from generation to generation.
