Farmers' organizations, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Agriculture will jointly defend Latvia's interests in EU direct payments
On Tuesday, June 26 at 11:15 a.m., Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis, Minister of Agriculture Laimdota Straujuma, and representatives of farmers' organizations will meet to jointly discuss defending Latvia's interests in the EU direct payments issue before the European Council meeting in Brussels on June 28-29.
This week, the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee's proposal for equalizing direct payments was presented in the European Parliament, stipulating that direct payments should not be less than 651 billion euros of the EU average. Baltic farmers have previously expressed disappointment with this proposal, as they are demanding at least 801 billion euros of the EU average support level.
Representatives of the Latvian Agricultural Cooperative Association (LLKA), the Cooperation Council of Farmers' Organizations (LOSP) and the Farmers' Saeima (ZSA) will present their arguments to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Agriculture on the need for the Latvian government to maintain a firm position on the issue of direct payments, as well as present the Prime Minister with a petition (appeal) to the EU institutions, which has been signed by more than 18 thousand Latvian residents, and which the representatives of Baltic farmers will submit to the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, on June 28 (Martin Schulz).
The event will be attended by Indulis Jansons (LLKA), Ilze Aizsilniece (LLKA), Edgars Treibergs (LOSP), Agita Hauka (LOSP), Māra Rudzāte (LOSP), Maira Dzelzkalēja (ZSA) and Juris Lazdiņš (ZSA) from the farmers' side.
We invite media representatives to participate in the event!
The activities are implemented within the framework of the National Rural Network event "Sectoral Expert Reports".
