The project cycle for young people on environmentally friendly and biodiverse farming has concluded

Project implemented by the Latvian Association of Agricultural Cooperatives (LLKA) “Youth – the future farmer in an environmentally friendly and biodiverse farm” has concluded with the implementation of three seminars-workshops “The Grain Path from Spring to Autumn” in November for a total of 150 students of vocational secondary education institutions in the largest grain cooperatives – “Durbes grauds”, “LATRAPS” and “VAKS” and the member farms of these cooperatives.

Taking into account climate change and related activities around the world, young people in Latvia who will connect their future with farming must also be knowledgeable and informed about working in an environmentally friendly way. Therefore, in order to educate and encourage young people to create environmentally friendly and biodiverse farms in the future, within the framework of the project implemented by the Latvian Agricultural Academy, a total of 150 young people from Kandava Agricultural Technical School and its Cīrava and Saulaine branches, Bulduri Horticulture Comprehensive School and Smiltene Technical School took advantage of the opportunity to gain additional knowledge outside the walls of their schools.

Līga Ruža, Director of Customer Management of the cooperative “LATRAPS”, agronomist-expert: “Our country needs knowledgeable and capable specialists in the field of agriculture, therefore the cooperative greatly appreciates any opportunity in which we can meaningfully educate future farmers, in this way we try to be socially responsible. The cooperative is responsive to participation in projects that have the opportunity to raise the quality of future specialists working in the agricultural sector. We classify this project as valuable for the future of Latvian agriculture. This project is one of the positive examples of how to educate young people about the processes taking place in the agricultural sector, as well as about what awaits them after obtaining a specific profession, where one of the important factors in the sector is the correct attitude towards environmental issues.

Sandris Bēča, Chairman of the Board of the cooperative “Durbes grauds”: "The format of the project was engaging and exciting. Young people were interested in participating in the event's activities. I believe that seminars of this and similar nature should be organized for young people in the future to broaden their personal horizons and draw attention to environmentally friendly farming."

Indulis Jansons, Chairman of the Board of the cooperative “VAKS”: "Young people need to be educated more actively about environmental issues in general, including a friendly attitude towards the environment both in everyday life and on their farms. Therefore, it is a pleasure that within the framework of this project, the cooperative "VAKS" emphasized environmental issues to young people from the Smiltene Technical School, both from the perspective of the cooperative and the everyday life of the farm."

Seminars-workshops for young people were organized as part of a project by the Latvian Environmental Protection Fund.
