We encourage you to support the vegetable and fruit growing industries.

Due to adverse climatic conditions, the last two seasons have been particularly difficult for vegetable growers in Latvia. Assessing the current situation, the association “Farmers' Council” sent a letter to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Agriculture at the end of January with an appeal to support Latvian vegetable and fruit growers.

Juris Lazdins, Chairman of the Association “Farmers’ Council”: “In order to maintain the economic viability and existence of the sector, which is so important for the Latvian economy and regional development, as well as to ensure that Latvian consumers will also be able to purchase vegetables and fruits grown in Latvia in the future, we call on the Prime Minister and the Minister of Agriculture to assess the situation and, within the limits of possibilities, find support mechanisms for the vegetable and fruit growing sector. Not only this year, but also the previous season was difficult for vegetable growers. The reason for this is not a lack of knowledge or experience, but rather climate change and limited harvesting and storage capacities. The area under vegetable cultivation in Latvia has always tended to decrease, and years like this only exacerbate this. In such difficult circumstances, it is possible that some vegetable growers will reduce production or choose another type of activity.”

Due to climate and market conditions, the horticultural industry is currently under threat. The new season is approaching, farmers will have to purchase seeds, peat, and other resources for production, which requires significant investments. After such a difficult year, many vegetable growers will have financial difficulties starting the new season. Support would be very important for stabilizing the industry.
