We expect stability and the ability to respond to crisis situations from the new government.

The 12th Saeima elections took place on October 4. The organization's leadership answers what the farmers' organization "Zemnieku Saeima" expects from the new government and what the immediate tasks will be.

Juris Lazdins, Chairman of the Association "Farmers' Council": "Together with the members of the 11th Saeima, we have accomplished several important tasks for the development of agriculture, such as work on the law on land privatization in rural areas, which is very important for farmers in order to keep Latvia's most important resource in the hands of local farmers. We hope that the work with the members of the 12th Saeima and the future governments will continue in the same constructive manner. The most important issue to be resolved in the coming weeks will be the 2015 budget, including funding for transitional state support and excise-free diesel fuel. The new government must also think about how to most successfully overcome the losses caused by the Russian Federation's food embargo so that farmers do not lose their economic activities."

Maira Dzelzkalēja, Deputy Chairwoman of the Board of the Association "Farmers' Council": "The main thing we expect from the new government is stability, continuation of the work we have started, and the ability to respond quickly in crisis situations."

Juris Cīrulis, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Association "Farmers' Council" and owner of the "Mežacīruļi" farm: "I believe that nothing will change after the elections and this time we must thank God that nothing will change. The good thing is that Latvians have finally finished experimenting with parties and we will probably have a similar government as in the previous term. As for the Minister of Agriculture, if Jānis Dūklavs continues the work he has started, then I urge him to work on supporting dairy farmers. Before the elections, the audience or the people understood that supporting dairy farmers was pre-election theater. The elections are over and now we must continue working to prevent the tragic situation as soon as possible and find solutions, such as new outlets and other crisis-mitigating supports."
