Webinar “Research results for improving soil fertility and water quality”
According to the Water Framework Directive (Directive 2000/60/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 October 2000), good water status must be achieved in EU Member States by 2027. In Latvia, high and good water status is currently achieved in 361 TP3T water bodies. According to the latest Nitrates Report for 2016–2019, nitrate content in particularly sensitive areas is not decreasing and in some cases exceeds the indicators set out in the Nitrates Directive. The European Commission has recommended that Latvia review the boundaries of particularly sensitive areas or determine other measures that would improve the status of waters.
The Ministry of Agriculture has ordered Latvian University of Biosciences and Technology the following studies related to water pollution from agricultural activities:
1. “Assessment of the impact of natural and anthropogenic factors on the losses of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds from agricultural lands”, whose aim is to develop proposals and measures to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus runoff.
2. “Surface water and groundwater quality monitoring in particularly sensitive areas and agricultural lands in the agricultural runoff monitoring program”, to work together with other institutions to improve the condition of water bodies at risk in Latviaby implementing measures set out in the Daugava, Gauja, Lielupe and Venta river basin management plans.
3. “"The effect of soil liming and mineral fertilizer doses on water quality, soil agrochemical parameters and crop yield", within which The impact of different soil liming and mineral fertilizer doses on water quality, soil agrochemical composition and crop yield parameters was evaluated. The results of this studyus can be used to justify soil limingyou as a measure to improve soil fertility and water qualityyou.
To provide an opportunity for interested parties to familiarize themselves with the research results and ask questions to the researchers, The Ministry of Agriculture invites you to the presentation of the above-mentioned research on February 16, at 10:00 am online on the Zoom platform, login link:
