ZSA open seminar – council meeting on the Bauska side
On Friday, more than 40 participants gathered at a seminar organized by the ZSA - an open council meeting - in the Bauska area. We visited three completely different farms and gained valuable knowledge, experience, and ideas from each.
Many thanks to the hosts of the Eriņi, Vaidelotes, Krišjāni and the recreation complex "Rožmalas" for the wonderful welcome!
In the open part of the council meeting, we talked about the agricultural situation in the regions of Latvia, current events in the livestock sector, news in the implementation of the RDP, as well as other issues. The admission of 3 new members to the organization was approved.
The issue that caused long discussions was the situation in the dairy industry and possible solutions. It was agreed that the ZSA would continue to seek support by addressing the responsible representatives of the European Commission, as well as by repeatedly addressing the Ministry of Agriculture together with representatives of other Latvian farmers' organizations. At the same time, farmers themselves should also seek solutions. One example, similar to England and Ireland, could be the previous practice of letting cows out to pasture, thus reducing the costs of preparing fodder. Information was received about farms that are ceasing production, selling cows either to other dairy producers or transferring them to slaughterhouses.
Kristīne Krūmiņa, a representative of DNB Bank, also participated in the seminar, presenting the crediting opportunities for farmers offered by the bank, and also answering questions from the council.
We are pleased that the council meeting was also attended by part-time students from the Faculty of Agriculture of the Latvian University of Agriculture, led by Professor Dzidra Kreišmane. We hope that this long and informative day was a valuable benefit for them.
