ZSA seminar “New plants in our gardens and innovative options for their processing”
On February 24, ZSA organized a remote seminar “New plants in our gardens and innovative opportunities for their processing”. At the seminar, Maira Dzelzkalēja-Burmistre, Deputy Chairwoman of the ZSA Board, presented the challenges of the near future for farmers in 2021-2022 and introduced the planned support for fruit and berry growers and processors. Andrejs Vītoliņš, head of the nursery “Dimzas”, told more about plants with high added value, their cultivation, use and potential.

In the continuation of the seminar, Senior Inspector of the Plant Quarantine Department of the State Plant Protection Service Jūlija Sebeleva spoke about the requirements of regulatory acts when purchasing, growing and distributing fruit and berry seedlings. Leading researcher of the Institute of Horticulture and Head of the Processing and Biochemistry Department Dalija Segliņa spoke about the possibilities of cooperation with the industry in the development of new fruit and vegetable processing technologies. Professor of the Faculty of Food Technology of the Latvian University of Agriculture, Head of the Technology and Knowledge Transfer Department Dr.sc.ing. Sandra Muižniece-Brasava presented the opportunities offered by the Faculty of Food Technology of the Latvian University of Agriculture for extending the shelf life of fruits and berries and developing innovative products. Eduards Vilks, owner of SIA Zeltlejas, shared his experience with growing sea buckthorn. “Agrihorts” researcher Regīna Rancāne introduced the possibilities of using weather stations to predict harmful organisms in apple trees. At the end of the seminar, ZSA project manager Inga Bērziņa presented the LIVERUR RAIN model.
