Project “Baltic COMPASS”

Baltic Sea Region Transnational Cooperation Programme 2007 – 2013 project “Comprehensive Policy Actions and Investments in Sustainable Solutions in Agriculture” – Baltic COMPASS.
Project objective promote sustainable agriculture in the Baltic Sea region. The 90 million people living around the Baltic Sea want to eat high-quality products grown in their region. However, the production of these products must not pose a risk to the Baltic Sea. The Baltic COMPASS project develops win-win solutions for the agricultural and environmental sectors, which gradually create a sustainable rural economy and healthy ecosystems in the Baltic Sea region.
The Baltic COMPASS project is funded by the European Union as a strategic project to support investments and implement policy measures. The project involves 23 partners, representing state institutions, professional public organizations, research institutions and innovation centers from 9 Baltic Sea region countries: Sweden, Finland, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany and Denmark.

Total project budget ~ 6.6 million EUR. Lead partner – Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
The project process is organized into six work packages (WP):
WP 1 – Project Management and Administration
The task is effective and timely project management, which ensures the successful progress of the project and timely, high-quality reporting to supervisory authorities.

Task – transfer of project results to target groups

WP 3 – Use and transfer of best available techniques
The task is to disseminate examples of the best available methods and innovative solutions for manure management, business management, and technologies.

WP 4 – Investment Preparation
Mission – To promote investment in the best available technologies and solutions
Head – Henning Lyngso Foged, Bioenergy and Environmental Technology Innovation Center, Denmark
WP 5 – Comprehensive assessment and scenario modelling
Task – Provide new opportunities for integrated, science-based decision-making
Head – Sirkka Tattari, Finnish Environment Institute, Finland
WP 6 – Policy making and adaptation
Task – Promoting legality and adaptive management processes in agricultural and environmental policy development
Leader – Neil Powell, Stockholm Environment Institute, Sweden
