Practical measures for integrated management of drainage systems
with the aim of reducing the input of nutrients into the Baltic Sea
(NUTRINFLOW)

Priority: Sustainable use of shared resources,
Specific objective 2.4.:Inputs of nutrients and toxins into the Baltic Sea have been eliminated/reduced.
Purpose: reduce the inflow of nutrients into inland waters of countries and the Baltic Sea by implementing and presenting innovative, comprehensive and beneficial reclamation system solutions for the parties involved, which would reduce the leakage of nitrogen and phosphates into the sea.

The project continues the direction initiated in the “Baltic Compact” and “Baltic Compass” projects regarding environmentally friendly solutions in drainage systems. The demonstration site of the new project will be the Aile stream in Tērvete and Jelgava regions, the Sodīte river, as well as water quality measurements will continue at SIA “LLU mps Vecauce”.
Activities:
- Stakeholder meetings/seminars to promote better cooperation between stakeholders and the use of innovative methods and technologies in the implementation of water protection measures. 12 regional meetings are planned, 1 report on the conduct of the Stakeholder Dialogue as a means of stimulating innovation. It is planned to link the Stakeholder Dialogue Group method with the European Innovation Partnerships (EIP) to evaluate different approaches to increasing the effectiveness of environmental responsibility.
Possible demonstration locations and methods in nature will also be selected based on the results of the working groups and seminars. The following will be involved in the events:
- Representatives from municipalities – Tērvete, Zaļenieki, Zemgale planning region, Jelgava district;
- Farmers;
- Experts from the association “Farmers' Council”;
- Specialists from the Latvia University of Agriculture;
- Representatives of the local community.
- The external expert will be responsible for the dialogue development and development process, as well as the preparation of the recommendation report.
- Demonstration of innovative technologies and methods will be organized in 3 separate locations, which were selected as a result of dialogue seminars. Accordingly, external services will be contracted for the installation of demonstrations. Planned demonstration locations – Jelgava region and Zaļenieki parish.
- Knowledge transfer, information dissemination – video material will be developed with the participation of a professional team.
- International and national dialogue – participation in policy development processes (meetings, seminars, working groups). Dialogue with decision-makers at national and EU level. Presentation of experience, results, etc.
- Demonstration monitoring. LLU will collect and regularly analyze water samples throughout the project.
