Project SuManu Platform – sustainable manure and plant nutrient management to reduce nutrient losses in the Baltic Sea Region
Nutrient retention in the food production cycle
Effective management of organic fertilizers and nutrients is beneficial for both the environment and farmers, and it is also a safe and sustainable resource for future food production.
Runoff of plant nutrients from fields into waterways contributes to eutrophication, while livestock farming is a major source of ammonia emissions, which cause acidification, eutrophication and the formation of harmful particles. The loss of valuable plant nutrients is also an economic loss for farmers.
The aim of the SuMaNu platform project is to analyse and synthesise results and recommendations from selected ongoing and completed projects related to agri-environmental sustainability and to better link these results to policies.

Four approaches – from manure to soil and air
SuMaNu brings together Interreg Baltic Sea Region projects Baltic Slurry Acidification (link) and Manure Standards (Manure standards) (link), Interreg Central Baltic project GreenAgri (link) and BONUS program project PROMISE. The Baltic Slurry Acidification project aims to reduce nitrogen losses in the livestock sector by promoting the use of slurry acidification technologies. The Manure Standards project is developing common guidelines for more efficient collection and use of manure data. The GreenAgri project aims to reduce nutrient losses in the Baltic States by implementing and testing effective organic manure management methods. The BONUS PROMISE project is evaluating methods to close the phosphorus cycle in agricultural production, with a special focus on organic waste. It will also evaluate useful information obtained from the Baltic Manure, Baltic Compass and Baltic Compact projects.

Towards a regional and comprehensive vision for sustainable nutrient management
The SuMaNu project will synthesize the solutions developed in four different projects to develop comprehensive recommendations for environmentally safe and economically sustainable manure management. SuMaNu will share this information with decision-makers and government institutions at national and international levels. It will also be shared with farmers through farmer organizations and consultants.
