GreenAgri
Project content:
The aim of the GreenAgri project is to reduce the leaching of plant nutrients from agricultural activities in the Baltic States. To achieve this goal, an environmentally friendly organic fertilizer management will be developed and tested during the project. Currently, agricultural activities are one of the sources from which nutrients are eventually transported to the Baltic Sea, the idea of the project is to change this situation.
The project brings together Estonian and Latvian farmers with the aim of reducing eutrophication in the Baltic Sea. During the project, 20 farmers from Estonia and Latvia will implement innovative technologies and methods in demonstration fields by investing their own financial resources. Experts and researchers will collect and analyze nutrient leakage data and provide farmers with information on various solutions for reducing nutrient leakage. This is the first time that experience from technology demonstrations in the fields of specific farms will be transferred to a wide range of farms, using the intellectual capital of Estonian and Latvian farmers, agricultural organizations and research institutions.
The main benefit of the project will be reduced nutrient input into the Baltic Sea from 20 demonstration farms in Estonia and Latvia. Sustainability will be ensured by the new knowledge, which will be disseminated to at least 300 farmers. Consultants, who will gain knowledge and experience during the project, will be able to support farmers on both sides of the border in the future. The project results will also serve Baltic Sea Environmental Protection Commission (HELCOM) to achieve the goals of reducing phosphorus and nitrogen in the Gulfs of Finland and Riga, improving the ecological and environmental status by 2021.
